Use of the Boardmaker Plus program
In a Resource Room
Maybe there are others out there like me that felt intimidated by Boardmaker Plus. I was under the assumption that since I didn’t make it to the summer training that there was no way I was going to get the hang of it on my own. Wrong. With the encouragement of co-worker, speech pathologist Claudia Lagler I signed up for some of Mayer-Johnson’s teleconferences. They can be done at home or school. You sign up at: https://dynavoxtech.webex.com. With a few classes under my belt and some time with the disc at home to practice what I was taught I started making up boards to be used for a number of students. Below are just a couple of practical and relatively easy activities I discovered and how to do it.
Display Boards for Decoding and/or Comprehension Practice
1) Sight Words Practice
I made up boards of our 220 words we call “Snoopy 220 Words” at NPE with pictures and without pictures. This way students can practice with the pictures then when ready without the pictures. They look at a word attempt it, click and hear the word spoken to them.
2) Vocabulary Words Practice
Another way to use this template would be to add Vocabulary Words with the word/picture shown then add the definition spoken
To Do:
· Insert Boardmaker Disc-(install if not already installed)
· Click far right choice Open a Template
· Click BM MJ Displays
· Click MJ 48 squares

· Click the little red square Display Thumbnail View to choose
Which picture you want
· Click your choice
· In the Alternate symbol names field make sure the word/s is
Typed the way you want it to look, if not correct
· Click Enter on keyboard (word and picture appears in the square you’ve chosen
· Keep doing this for all the words you have and if the word
does not have a picture click the “A” Text Tool and then type
in the word in your desired cell

· Click Point Tool button
· Double click the word in the cell and Button Action will appear
· Click Speak message and type in the word/s you want spoken
· Click OK
· Click Type message and type the word/s with a space after the word/s
· Click OK
· Click OK again
· Do this with each cell
· For the student to use the Interactive Board…..
· Click Dynamic Boards at the very top
· Click Use
· The student then can click and hear the word/definition
· To get out of this mode click the esc top left key on the keyboard
There is so much more you can do with this fantastic software this is
just one simple way. I would be glad to email as an attachment the sight
word boards I have already made up that you could save and open into
your Boardmaker program. Let me know if it is something you could use.
